Tariff Groups — customs classification

Tariff Groups map product dimensions (thickness, width, length) to customs tariff numbers (e.g. HS code 7208.10.00 for hot-rolled plate). Customs brokers and export staff use them to make sure correct tariff classifications appear on export documents.

Structure

A tariff group has two levels:

  1. Tariff Group Header — the umbrella group, e.g. "Flat Steel 2-4mm".

  2. Tariff Group Lines — each line a combination of thickness/width/length linked to one tariff number.

Empty dimension fields act as wildcards ("any value"). DXSteel picks the most specific matching line on shipment.

Setup workflow

  1. Open Tariff Groups.

  2. Create a new header with a meaningful code (FLAT_2MM, BEAM_HEA).

  3. Fill Description.

  4. Open the subpage Tariff Group Lines.

  5. Add a line per dimension combination:Thickness — e.g. 2.0Width — e.g. 100.0 (or empty = any)Length — empty = anyTariff Number — reference to the BC standard Tariff Number table.

  6. Link the tariff group to an Item Profile via the Tariff Group Code field.

Best practices

One tariff group per product category: BEAM_HEA, BEAM_IPE, FLAT_COIL, TUBE_ROUND. Lines stay manageable.

Use wildcards: don't make a separate line for every length when they all share the same tariff. One line with thickness=2.0 and empty width/length covers all 2 mm flat material.

Tariffs change: HS and CN codes are periodically updated by customs. Schedule a yearly review of your tariff groups against the current EU customs tariff list to avoid reassessments.

  • Item Profile — carries the Tariff Group Code.

  • BC-standard Tariff Numbers — the HS/CN code table referenced by the lines.

  • Intrastat Declaration (BC standard) — uses these tariff numbers automatically on exports.
